Great Bembridge Paper Boat Race
Great Bembridge Paper Boat Race - Saturday 3rd August
Three races were held in a light south easterly breeze, calm seas and excellent visibility. The outer distance course line was marked by a rope with floats stretching from the centre pontoon to the eastern pontoon ably patrolled by David Perchard who rowed the line to round up craft that strayed from the course.
A total of 31 entries in three categories, Juniors under 9, Juniors under 15s and adults raced and a great number of visitors to the harbour helped their young crews construct a range of monohulls, catamarans and even trimarans all measured pre race as per the NOR instructions. Interestingly for budding yacht designers, the under 15’s category was won by a cardboard box with a sail at each corner and shingle for ballast!
The usual organised chaos prevailed, the PA system failed and organizer Robin Powell could not make himself heard. but fortunately the Commodore’s voice did not and amid much cheering from parents and grandparents a good day on the water was had!
Prizes were awarded by Vice Commodore Linda Briant and Members and visitors alike then settled down to an excellent BBQ. Thanks to all those who helped run the event.
Footnote: Howard Allen’s sixth monohull helmed by ‘Teddy’ was much modified this year with extra ballast in the keel after last year’s early capsize. Sadly, it was unplaced! Better luck next year Howard!
