Great Bembridge Paper Boat Race at Brading Haven Yacht Club
on Saturday 3rd August - first race start: 12:00
Calling all budding boat builders, young and not so young - this is your chance for nautical glory!! The Great Bembridge Paper Boat Race will be held at Brading Haven Yacht Club. Participant Registration by 11:45 - first race start 12:00 (please arrive in plenty of time for Registration and Boat Checks). Please note: the BHYC Bar will be open from 11:00 and a BBQ available from 12:30.
The Water Taxi will be running a drop off/collection at the BHYC pontoon, or you can walk across the Duver and over the Causeway (Old Mill Wall), through Bembridge Marina Car Park to Embankment Road and the Club - about 15 to 20 minutes.
There are Rules which can be found in the Notice of Race and an Entry Form to complete. Entries should be made before Monday 29th July to Brading Haven Yacht Club, or after that date handed in at the Paper Boat Building Workshop at the Duver Marina on Friday 2nd August. All Entry Fees (£5 per entry, or if under 15 on race day - £2) are donated to the Harbour's nominated event charity, the Sophie Rolf Trust - KissyPuppy.
NOTICE OF RACE
This event is being organised by Brading Haven Yacht Club on Saturday 3rd August as part of the Bembridge Harbour Family Fun Weekend. The event is open to ALL. The Junior Race(s) start time is 12:00 followed by the Adult's Race as soon afterwards as practical.
Please note a parent or guardian must accompany any entrant under 15 years of age when launching and recovering their craft from pontoons and that lifejackets are mandatory for anybody going onto the BHYC pontoons (BHYC will have a limited number available to borrow).
All entrants, guardians and their guests using the Brading Haven Yacht Club premises and facilities for this event do so entirely at their own risk. Brading Haven Yacht Club does not accept liability for any damage to, or loss of, property belonging to entrants, guardians and their guests.
It would be helpful if boat sails could be marked with a coloured symbol to aid identification by the owners and the judges. We suggest this could be a cross, a triangle, a circle or similar or perhaps the entrants initials preferably in more than one colour.
RULES
Boats may be multi or single hull craft the hulls of which must be constructed solely of paper and/or cardboard and may be painted or varnished to improve their resistance to water. Other materials such as wood, metal, plastic and fabric may be used for spars and sails etc. and ballast may be included within the hull. The only means of propulsion is wind; engines of any description are not permitted! The hull length must not exceed 18 inches (46 cm). Radio controlled craft are not permitted.
ENTRIES
Online entry in advance is via the BHYC website and must be made by Monday 29th July, or after that date through the main Harbour Office at the Duver Marina, or at the Paper Boat Building Workshop at the Duver Marina on Friday 2nd August. There is an Entry Fee per boat of £5 for Adults (over 15) and £2 for Juniors who must be under 15 on Race Day.
100% of the funds raised from the Entry Fees will go to the Sophie Rolf Trust - Kissy Puppy, the Harbour's nominated Island charity.
THE COURSE
The course will be between two of the BHYC pontoons access to which will be limited to one person per boat (except that under 15 year olds should be accompanied by an adult), and the Judges. As far as possible the races will be down wind and tide! People going onto the pontoons will be required to wear life jackets: a limited number will be available on the day.
PRIZES
There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for each age category and also one for the Best Built Boat (as judged by the Scrutineers). Prizes are provided by Bembridge Harbour Authority.
