Bembridge Gig Fest

Bembridge Gig Fest 2022

Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September

For Gigs, Galleys and all types of traditional rowing boats - organised by Bembridge Harbour Authority and the Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club

Despite the 2021 Bembridge Gig Fest being cancelled when Coronavirus restrictions were extended, boats from 4 mainland clubs rowed across the Solent to join the Island’s Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club for an informal gathering in Bembridge Harbour, with informal racing, socialising and a barbecue.  Here's a few images from the Gig Gathering to give a flavour ...

The 2022 event will be as originally envisaged, with informal racing on Saturday and Sunday, supported on the water by Brading Haven Yacht Club, and a Saturday evening gathering with food and live music at the Duver Marina - more on this to follow.  The plan is for straight line races of about 2km on Saturday, and head-style timed racing from Bembridge Beach around St Helens Fort on Sunday, for Ladies, Men's and Mixed crews.

More information will be available here in due course - in the meantime, if you have any queries and/or want to be added to the event database to receive news and information on the event, please email: fiona@bembridgeharbour.co.uk

Cross-Solent Transit ...

One option is to row in company with others, which may also offer the opportunity of being accompanied by a safety/support boat coming to the event.  Last year boats launched from Langstone, some of whom came that far by road trailer.   These arrangements will be best left to liaison between individual clubs, whose contact details could be
shared (with their permission).

Berthing

Berthing alongside the Duver pontoon (rafted) is free for rowing boats for the night of Saturday 24th September, but all are very welcome to arrive earlier and stay longer at a discounted rate.  Berthing for support vessels will be at our standard tariff and should be booked online in advance.   It would be very useful if support vessels could identify themselves as such - via Fiona Thorpe (fiona@bembridgeharbour.co.uk) or the Berthing Team (mail@bembridgeharbour.co.uk), so that they can be berthed as close to the rowing boat area as feasible.

Toilet/Shower Facilities

Our toilet / shower facilities are currently accessed via a one-way system (as part of our Covid-19 safety measures), with face covering required in the communal areas.  They are an inclusive mixture of combined toilet and shower cubicles as well as separate units.  Disabled facilities are available on request.

The Duver Cafe

Open daily throught the season from 0830, the Duver Cafe at the Duver Marina services a range of fresh coffee, teas, soft drinks and cakes, as well as freshly made breakfast rolls and sandwiches.  There's no indoor seating but plenty of outside seating to enable safe social distancing, with views right across the Harbour and a large marquee for shelter if the weather is unfriendly.  On a Friday and Saturday afternoon/evening they serve up delicious fresh wood-fired pizzas which can be ordered in advance through their website - duvercafeiow.co.uk or on Facebook

Steve's Bar

Newly opened for the 2021 season, Steve's Bar, at the Duver Marina, serves up local Island ales, beers, wines and spirits.  Opening hours vary but are usually 1200-1900 Friday and Saturday, and 1200-1600 on Sunday (later during events, including the Gig Fest!).   Take a look at the Steve's Bar Facebook page.

Water Taxi and directions

The Harbour Water Taxi service will be running throughout the weekend - click here for more information.    Click here for directions to the Duver Marina (St Helens) by road.

Accommodation

A list of local accommodation is available here, including camping and B&B options (please note that this list was compiled in 2020 - we are an updated will be posted here when available).  Accommodation can also be found on the Visit Isle of Wight official tourism websit along with lots of other Island info: visitisleofwight.co.uk

Travel to the Island (if not at the end of an oar)

Various ferry options are provided by Wightlink (Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Ryde, Lymington to Yarmouth) and Red Funnel (Southamptom to East Cowes - vehicles, and Southampton to West Cowes - high speed passenger service) who both offer a mixture of car transport and foot passenger vessels and Hovertravel runs a passenger service between Southsea and Ryde.

Another option, which was enquired about last year, is boat hire.  There are a number of companies on the Island who charter boats including collection from the mainland, several of which are linked to below (but this is by no means an exhaustive list!):

Bembridge Marine Ltd
Rebel Marine
Bembridge Powerboat Training

Covid-19 safety measures such as hand washing and sanitiser stations remain in place at the Harbour.  The Bembridge Gig Fest will be subject to Covid-19 restrictions if any are in place at the time of the event.
